A Vaccine for Cancer?
Yes! For several years vaccines against Hepatitis B (that
can lead to liver cancer) and several forms of the papilloma virus (the main
cause of cervical cancer) have been in use. There are two types of vaccines,
those that are used to treat existing cancers, and those that are used as
cancer preventatives.
Any vaccine works because it wakes up the immune system to
recognize disease cells and to kill them when they occur. Vaccines are made
from bacteria or viruses that have been weakened or killed, or toxins that have
been deactivated. Because of this, the germs cannot cause disease, but instead
fight it.
How a Cancer Vaccine Works
The human body s immune system can fight cancer, but because
the diseased cells are so much like the healthy cells, the immune system
doesn't recognize them as wrong cells and does not fight them. A cancer
vaccine works the same way as any vaccine it forces the immune system to see
these cells as bad and something to be destroyed.
Cancer vaccines, unlike other vaccines, are specific to the
patient, using the patient s own unique cancer cells to formulate the vaccine.
These treatments are still in the clinical trial phase, but the trials are
advanced, and have been shown to be successful, with few side effects.
Currently third-level long-term clinical trials are offering
this treatment is avaleable in Australia and at Hadassah Medical Organization in Israel.
